War on Drugs: Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC) attack a military base in Guaviare, starting three weeks of guerrilla warfare in which at least 130 Colombians are killed. (4. September 1996)

Storms provoke severe flooding on the Saguenay River, beginning one of Quebec's costliest natural disasters ever: the Saguenay Flood. (18. July 1996)

The Community of Portuguese Language Countries is founded. (17. July 1996)

Pakistani President Farooq Ahmed Khan Leghari dismisses the government of Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto and dissolves the National Assembly of Pakistan. (5. November 1996)

Centennial Olympic Park bombing: in Atlanta, United States, a pipe bomb explodes at Centennial Olympic Park during the 1996 Summer Olympics. One woman (Alice Hawthorne) is killed, and a cameraman suffers a heart attack fleeing the scene. 111 are injured. (27. July 1996)

Osama bin Laden issues message entitled 'A declaration of war against the Americans occupying the land of the two holy places.' (23. August 1996)

In Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, a panel of federal judges blocks a law against indecency on the internet. (12. June 1996)

The Khobar Towers bombing in Saudi Arabia kills 19 U.S. servicemen. (25. June 1996)

Aeroperú Flight 603, a Boeing 757, crashes into the Pacific Ocean shortly after takeoff from Lima, Peru, killing 70. (2. October 1996)

Battle of Mullaitivu: the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam capture the Sri Lanka Army's base, killing over 1200 soldiers. (18. July 1996)

Hurricane Fran makes landfall near Cape Fear, North Carolina as a Category 3 storm with 115 mph sustained winds. Fran caused over $3 billion in damage and killed 27 people. (5. September 1996)
