In a highly-scrutizined election President of Zimbabwe Robert Mugabe is re-elected in a landslide after his opponent Morgan Tsvangirai had withdrawn a week earlier, citing violence against his party's supporters. (27. June 2008)

Sixteen infants in Gansu Province, China, who had been fed on tainted milk powder, are diagnosed with kidney stones; in total an estimated 300,000 infants are affected. (16. July 2008)

Lehman Brothers files for Chapter 11 bankruptcy, the largest bankruptcy filing in U.S. history. (15. September 2008)

56 people are killed and over 200 people are injured in 21 bomb blasts in Ahmedabad bombing in India. (26. July 2008)

Delhi, India, is hit by a series of bomb blasts, resulting in 30 deaths and 130 injuries. (13. September 2008)

Spanair Flight 5022, from Madrid, Spain to Gran Canaria, skids off the runway and crashes at Barajas Airport. 146 people are killed in the crash, and 8 more die later. Only 18 people survive. (20. August 2008)
