George Bernard Shaw refuses to accept the money for his Nobel Prize, saying, "I can forgive Alfred Nobel for inventing dynamite, but only a fiend in human form could have invented the Nobel Prize." (18. November 1926)

The children's book Winnie-the-Pooh, by A. A. Milne, is first published. (14. October 1926)

In the United States the National Broadcasting Company is formed. (9. September 1926)

Antanas Smetona assumes power in Lithuania as the 1926 coup d'état is successful. (17. December 1926)

The deadliest November tornado outbreak in U.S. history strikes on Thanksgiving day. Twenty-seven twisters of great strength are reported in the Midwest, including the strongest November tornado, an estimated F4, that devastates Heber Springs, Arkansas. There are 51 deaths in Arkansas alone, 76 deaths and over 400 injuries in all. (25. November 1926)

The international Convention to Suppress the Slave Trade and Slavery is first signed. (25. September 1926)

Gertrude Ederle becomes the first woman to swim across the English Channel. (6. August 1926)

J. Gordon Whitehead sucker punches magician Harry Houdini in the stomach in Montreal, precipitating his death. (22. October 1926)

The United States Numbered Highway System, including U.S. Route 66, is established. (11. November 1926)

Emperor Taishō of Japan dies. His son, Prince Hirohito, succeeds him as Emperor Shōwa. (25. December 1926)
