Galla Placidia, half-sister of Emperor Honorius, is married to the Visigothic king Ataulf at Narbonne. The wedding is celebrated with Roman festivities and magnificent gifts from the Gothic booty. (1. January 414)

Emperor Honorius forces Galla Placidia into marriage to Constantius, his famous general (magister militum). (1. January 417)

Byzantine Emperor Zeno is forced to flee his capital at Constantinople, and his general, Basiliscus gains control of the empire. (9. January 475)

Seven-year-old Leo II succeeds his maternal grandfather Leo I as Byzantine emperor. He died ten months later. (18. January 474)

Vandal king Huneric organises a conference between Catholic and Arian bishops at Carthage. (1. February 481)

Leo I becomes emperor of the Byzantine Empire. (7. February 457)

Odoacer surrenders Ravenna after a 3-year siege and agrees to a mediated peace with Theodoric the Great. (25. February 493)

The University of Constantinople is founded by Emperor Theodosius II at the urging of his wife Aelia Eudocia. (27. February 425)

Gundobad (nephew of Ricimer) nominates Glycerius as emperor of the Western Roman Empire. (3. March 473)

Emperor Valentinian III is assassinated by two Hunnic retainers while training with the bow on the Campus Martius (Rome). (16. March 455)

Petronius Maximus becomes, with support of the Roman Senate, emperor of the Western Roman Empire. (17. March 455)
