World War II: Operation Deadlight ends after scuttling 121 of 154 captured U-boats. (12. February 1946)

The League of Nations officially dissolves, giving most of its power to the United Nations. (20. April 1946)

ENIAC, the first electronic general-purpose computer, is formally dedicated at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia. (15. February 1946)

Tokyo Telecommunications Engineering (later renamed Sony) is founded with around 20 employees. (7. May 1946)

Winston Churchill coins the phrase "Iron Curtain" in his speech at Westminster College, Missouri. (5. March 1946)

General Douglas MacArthur establishes the International Military Tribunal for the Far East in Tokyo to try Japanese war criminals. (19. January 1946)

Soviet troops leave the island of Bornholm, Denmark after an 11-month occupation. (5. April 1946)

King Ananda Mahidol is found shot dead in his bedroom, Bhumibol Adulyadej ascends to the throne of Thailand. He is currently the world's longest reigning monarch. (9. June 1946)

Enver Hoxha, Secretary General of the Communist Party of Albania, declares the People's Republic of Albania with himself as head of state. (11. January 1946)

The National Democratic Front wins a landslide victory in the municipal elections in French India. (23. June 1946)

Estonian school girls Aili Jõgi and Ageeda Paavel blow up the Soviet memorial which stood in front of the Bronze Soldier in Tallinn. (8. May 1946)

Manuel Roxas is elected the last President of the Commonwealth of the Philippines. (23. April 1946)
