The National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) is founded. (12. February 1909)

Kinemacolor, the first successful color motion picture process, is first shown to the general public at the Palace Theatre in London. (26. February 1909)

Construction of the ill fated RMS Titanic begins. (31. March 1909)

A group of mid-level Greek Army officers launches the Goudi coup, seeking wide-ranging reforms. (28. August 1909)

The Turkish military reverses the Ottoman countercoup of 1909 to force the overthrow of Sultan Abdul Hamid II. (13. April 1909)

The first Giro d'Italia starts from Milan. Italian cyclist Luigi Ganna will be the winner. (13. May 1909)

By signing the Anglo-Siamese Treaty of 1909, Thailand relinquishes its sovereignty over the Malay states of Kedah, Kelantan, Perlis and Terengganu, which become British protectorates. (10. March 1909)

Representatives from England, Australia and South Africa meet at Lord's and form the Imperial Cricket Conference. (15. June 1909)

The sixteen battleships of the Great White Fleet, led by USS Connecticut, return to the United States after a voyage around the world. (22. February 1909)

Louis Blériot makes the first flight across the English Channel in a heavier-than-air machine from (Calais to Dover, England, United Kingdom) in 37 minutes. (25. July 1909)

Robert Peary and Matthew Henson reach the North Pole. (6. April 1909)

Eugene Lefebvre crashes a new French-built Wright biplane during a test flight at Juvisy, south of Paris, becoming the first 'pilot' in the world to lose his life in a powered heavier-than-air craft. (7. September 1909)

The Montreal Canadiens ice hockey club, the oldest surviving professional hockey franchise in the world, is founded as a charter member of the National Hockey Association. (4. December 1909)

United States troops leave Cuba with the exception of Guantanamo Bay Naval Base after being there since the Spanish–American War. (28. January 1909)

French troops capture Abéché (in modern-day Chad) and install a puppet sultan in the Ouaddai Empire. (6. June 1909)

Selma Lagerlöf becomes the first female writer to win the Nobel Prize in Literature (10. December 1909)
