An 8.1 Mw earthquake and subsequent tsunami in Nankaidō, Japan, kills over 1,300 people and destroys over 38,000 homes. (21. December 1946)

Operation Crossroads: an atomic bomb is detonated underwater in the lagoon of Bikini Atoll. (25. July 1946)

Daegu October Incident occurs in Allied occupied Korea. (1. October 1946)

Cathay Pacific Airways is founded in Hong Kong. (24. September 1946)

Mensa International is founded in the United Kingdom. (1. October 1946)

Yugoslavia's new constitution, modeling that of the Soviet Union, establishes six constituent republics (Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, Macedonia, Montenegro, Serbia and Slovenia). (31. January 1946)

In San Francisco Bay, U.S. Marines from the nearby Treasure Island Naval Base stop a two-day riot at Alcatraz federal prison. Five people are killed in the riot. (4. May 1946)

First flight of the Convair B-36, the world's first mass-produced nuclear weapon delivery vehicle. (8. August 1946)
