Fritz Lang's futuristic film Metropolis is released in Germany. (10. January 1927)

German theoretical physicist Werner Heisenberg writes a letter to fellow physicist Wolfgang Pauli, in which he describes his uncertainty principle for the first time. (23. February 1927)

The first transatlantic telephone service is established – from New York, New York to London, United Kingdom. (7. January 1927)

Louis B. Mayer, head of film studio Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer (MGM), announces the creation of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, at a banquet in Los Angeles, California. (11. January 1927)

Turkey adopts the Gregorian calendar: December 18, 1926 (Julian), is immediately followed by January 1, 1927 (Gregorian). (1. January 1927)

Angered by the anti-clerical provisions of the Mexican Constitution of 1917, Catholic rebels in Mexico rebelled against the government. (2. January 1927)
