The Mirzapur Cadet College formally opens for academic activities in East Pakistan (now Bangladesh). (9. January 1965)

The Hamilton River in Labrador, Canada is renamed the Churchill River in honour of Winston Churchill. (1. February 1965)

Project Ranger: The Ranger 8 probe launches on its mission to photograph the Mare Tranquillitatis region of the Moon in preparation for the manned Apollo missions. Mare Tranquillitatis or the "Sea of Tranquility" would become the site chosen for the Apollo 11 lunar landing. (17. February 1965)

The wreck of the SS Georgiana, valued at over $50,000,000 and said to have been the most powerful Confederate cruiser, is discovered by teenage diver and pioneer underwater archaeologist E. Lee Spence, exactly 102 years after its destruction. (19. March 1965)

United States President Lyndon B. Johnson proclaims his "Great Society" during his State of the Union address. (4. January 1965)

A Rolling Stones concert in London, Ontario is shut down by police after 15 minutes due to rioting. (26. April 1965)

Launch of Early Bird, the first communications satellite to be placed in geosynchronous orbit. (6. April 1965)

Colonel Phạm Ngọc Thảo of the Army of the Republic of Vietnam, and a communist spy of the North Vietnamese Viet Minh, along with Generals Lâm Văn Phát and Trần Thiện Khiêm attempted a coup against the military junta of Nguyễn Khánh. (19. February 1965)

NASA spacecraft Ranger 9, equipped to convert its signals into a form suitable for showing on domestic television, brings images of the Moon into ordinary homes before crash landing. (24. March 1965)
