The New York Jets of the American Football League defeat the Baltimore Colts of the National Football League to win Super Bowl III in what is considered to be one of the greatest upsets in sports history. (12. January 1969)

Hawthorne Nevada Airlines Flight 708 crashes into Mount Whitney killing all on board. (18. February 1969)

United Airlines Flight 266 crashes into Santa Monica Bay killing all 32 passengers and six crew members. (18. January 1969)

Apollo program: NASA launches Apollo 9 to test the lunar module. (3. March 1969)

Black Panther Party members Bunchy Carter and John Huggins are killed during a meeting in Campbell Hall on the campus of UCLA. (17. January 1969)

In Toulouse, France, the first test flight of the Anglo-French Concorde is conducted. (2. March 1969)

The Troubles: The Royal Ulster Constabulary raid the Bogside area of Derry, damaging property and beating residents. In response, residents erect barricades and establish Free Derry. (5. January 1969)

Brazilian Army captain Carlos Lamarca deserts in order to fight against the military dictatorship, taking with him 10 machine guns and 63 rifles. (25. January 1969)

The Hawker Siddeley Harrier enters service with the Royal Air Force. (1. April 1969)

Charles de Gaulle resigns as President of France. (28. April 1969)

The Soviet Union launches Soyuz 5. (15. January 1969)

The EC-121 shootdown incident: North Korea shoots down a United States Navy aircraft over the Sea of Japan, killing all 31 on board. (15. April 1969)

Soviet and Chinese forces clash at a border outpost on the Ussuri River. (2. March 1969)

Czech student Jan Palach commits suicide by self-immolation in Prague, Czechoslovakia, in protest against the Soviets' crushing of the Prague Spring the year before. (16. January 1969)

The "Chicago Eight" plead not guilty to federal charges of conspiracy to incite a riot at the 1968 Democratic National Convention in Chicago. (9. April 1969)

Golda Meir becomes the first female Prime Minister of Israel. (17. March 1969)

The McGill français movement protest occurs, the second largest protest in Montreal's history with 10,000 trade unionists, leftist activists, college students, and some McGill students at McGill's Roddick Gates. The majority of the protesters are arrested. (28. March 1969)

Dr. Denton Cooley implants the first temporary artificial heart. (4. April 1969)
