The Draupner wave in the North Sea in Norway is detected, confirming the existence of freak waves. (1. January 1995)

Cosmonaut Valeriy Polyakov returns to earth after setting a record of 438 days in space. (22. March 1995)

In Culpeper, Virginia, the actor Christopher Reeve is paralyzed from the neck down after falling from his horse in a riding competition. (27. May 1995)

The Russian town of Neftegorsk is hit by a 7.6 magnitude earthquake that kills at least 2,000 people, half of the total population. (28. May 1995)

The Great Hanshin earthquake: A magnitude 7.3 earthquake occurs near Kobe, Japan, causing extensive property damage and killing 6,434 people. (17. January 1995)

Workers from the National Institutes of Health announce the success of clinical trials testing the first preventive treatment for sickle-cell disease. (30. January 1995)

Steve Fossett lands in Leader, Saskatchewan, Canada becoming the first person to make a solo flight across the Pacific Ocean in a balloon. (21. February 1995)

After being struck by lightning the crew are forced to ditch Bristow Flight 56C. All 18 aboard are later rescued. (19. January 1995)

33-year-old British mother Alison Hargreaves became the first woman to conquer Everest without oxygen or the help of sherpas. (13. May 1995)

A chemical fire in an apartment complex in Manila, Philippines, leads to the discovery of plans for Project Bojinka, a mass-terrorist attack. (6. January 1995)

Space Exploration: Astronaut Norman Thagard becomes the first American astronaut to ride to space on board a Russian launch vehicle. (14. March 1995)

Prime Minister of Poland Waldemar Pawlak resigns from parliament and is replaced by ex-communist Józef Oleksy. (1. March 1995)
