The Hadassah medical convoy massacre: In an ambush, 79 Jewish doctors, nurses and medical students from Hadassah Hospital and a British soldier are massacred by Arabs in Sheikh Jarra near Jerusalem. (13. April 1948)

The Communist Party takes control of government in Czechoslovakia and the period of the Third Republic ends. (25. February 1948)

Jorge Eliécer Gaitán's assassination provokes a violent riot in Bogotá (the Bogotazo), and a further ten years of violence in Colombia known as La violencia. (9. April 1948)

NASCAR is incorporated. (21. February 1948)

Members of the Malayan Communist Party kill three British plantation managers in Sungai Siput; in response, British Malaya declares a state of emergency. (16. June 1948)

The Conference of Youth and Students of Southeast Asia Fighting for Freedom and Independence convenes in Calcutta. (19. February 1948)

1948 Arab-Israeli War: the Kfar Etzion massacre is committed by Arab irregulars, the day before the declaration of independence of the state of Israel on May 14. (13. May 1948)

The Council of Europe is founded during the Hague Congress. (7. May 1948)

The first successful tornado forecast predicts that a tornado will strike Tinker Air Force Base, Oklahoma. (25. March 1948)

Thomas C. Wasson, the US Consul-General, is assassinated in Jerusalem, Israel. (23. May 1948)

Following the demise of the British Mandate of Palestine, Egypt, Transjordan, Lebanon, Syria, Iraq and Saudi Arabia invade Israel thus starting the 1948 Arab-Israeli War. (15. May 1948)

Chiang Kai-shek is elected as the first President of the Republic of China. (20. May 1948)

Edvard Beneš resigned as President of Czechoslovakia rather than signing the Ninth-of-May Constitution, making his nation a Communist state. (7. June 1948)

Communist revolution in Czechoslovakia. (22. February 1948)

Burma joins the United Nations. (19. April 1948)

Israel is declared to be an independent state and a provisional government is established. Immediately after the declaration, Israel is attacked by the neighboring Arab states, triggering the 1948 Arab-Israeli War. (14. May 1948)

President Harry S. Truman signs the Marshall Plan, authorizing $5 billion in aid for 16 countries. (3. April 1948)

Burma gains its independence from the United Kingdom. (4. January 1948)
