Project Ranger: The Ranger 8 probe launches on its mission to photograph the Mare Tranquillitatis region of the Moon in preparation for the manned Apollo missions. Mare Tranquillitatis or the "Sea of Tranquility" would become the site chosen for the Apollo 11 lunar landing. (17. February 1965)

NASA launches Gemini 3, the United States' first two-man space flight (crew: Gus Grissom and John Young). (23. March 1965)

The People's Democratic Party of Afghanistan is founded in Kabul, Afghanistan. (1. January 1965)

The first model of the new Saab Viggen fighter aircraft is unveiled. (4. April 1965)

Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. leads 3,200 people on the start of the third and finally successful civil rights march from Selma to Montgomery, Alabama. (21. March 1965)

The Palm Sunday tornado outbreak of 1965: Fifty-one tornadoes hit in six Midwestern states, killing 256 people. (11. April 1965)

The first Ford Mustang rolls off the show room floor, two days before it is set to go on sale nationwide. (15. April 1965)

Ranger program: NASA launches Ranger 9, the last in a series of unmanned lunar space probes. (21. March 1965)

The Soviet spacecraft Luna 5 crashes on the Moon. (12. May 1965)

The wreck of the SS Georgiana, valued at over $50,000,000 and said to have been the most powerful Confederate cruiser, is discovered by teenage diver and pioneer underwater archaeologist E. Lee Spence, exactly 102 years after its destruction. (19. March 1965)

Civil war breaks out in the Dominican Republic when Colonel Francisco Caamaño, overthrows the triumvirate that had been in power since the coup d'état against Juan Bosch. (24. April 1965)

The British Government announces the cancellation of the TSR-2 aircraft project. (6. April 1965)

Premier Tom Playford of South Australia loses power after 27 years in office. (6. March 1965)

Cosmonaut Aleksei Leonov, leaving his spacecraft Voskhod 2 for 12 minutes, became the first person to walk in space. (18. March 1965)
