The Cathedral of Our Lady of Peace in Honolulu, Hawaii is dedicated. Now the cathedral of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Honolulu, it is the oldest Roman Catholic cathedral in continuous use in the United States. (15. August 1843)

Tivoli Gardens, one of the oldest still intact amusement parks in the world, opens in Copenhagen, Denmark. (15. August 1843)

Giuseppe Verdi's opera I Lombardi alla prima crociata receives its first performance in Milan, Italy. (11. February 1843)

Brunel's steamship the SS Great Britain is launched, becoming the first ocean-going craft with an iron hull or screw propeller and becoming the largest vessel afloat in the world. (19. July 1843)

The first minstrel show in the United States, The Virginia Minstrels, opens (Bowery Amphitheatre in New York City). (6. February 1843)

The first major wagon train heading for the Pacific Northwest sets out on the Oregon Trail with one thousand pioneers from Elm Grove, Missouri. (16. May 1843)

The Wairau Affray, the first serious clash of arms between Māori and British settlers in the New Zealand Wars, takes place. (17. June 1843)

The Disruption in Edinburgh of the Free Church of Scotland from the Church of Scotland. (18. May 1843)
