World War II: An American pilot spots a downed, intact Mitsubishi A6M Zero on Akutan Island (the "Akutan Zero") that the US Navy uses to learn the aircraft's flight characteristics. (10. July 1942)

World War II: Operation Pedestal — The SS Ohio reaches the island of Malta barely afloat carrying vital fuel supplies for the island's defenses. (15. August 1942)

Orvan Hess and John Bumstead became the first in the United States successfully to treat a patient, Anne Miller, using penicillin. (14. March 1942)

World War II: Battle of Savo Island – Allied naval forces protecting their amphibious forces during the initial stages of the Battle of Guadalcanal are surprised and defeated by an Imperial Japanese Navy cruiser force. (9. August 1942)

Indian leader Mahatma Gandhi is arrested in Bombay by British forces, launching the Quit India Movement. (9. August 1942)

The Holocaust: August Frank, a higher official of the SS concentration camp administration department, issues a memorandum containing a great deal of operational detail in how Jews should be "evacuated". (26. September 1942)

Quit India Movement is launched in India against the British rule in response to Mohandas Gandhi's call for swaraj or complete independence. (8. August 1942)

The B-29 Superfortress makes its maiden flight. (21. September 1942)

World War II: The Thai Phayap Army invades the Shan States during the Burma Campaign. (10. May 1942)

Actress Hedy Lamarr and composer George Antheil receive a patent for a Frequency-hopping spread spectrum communication system that later became the basis for modern technologies in wireless telephones and Wi-Fi. (11. August 1942)

World War II: the Battle of Guadalcanal begins – United States Marines initiate the first American offensive of the war with landings on Guadalcanal and Tulagi in the Solomon Islands. (7. August 1942)
