Gnassingbé Eyadéma overthrows President of Togo Nicolas Grunitzky and installs himself as the new president, a title he would hold for the next 38 years. (14. April 1967)

Soviet space program: Soyuz 1 (Russian: Союз 1, Union 1) a manned spaceflight carrying cosmonaut Colonel Vladimir Komarov is launched into orbit. (23. April 1967)

The United States Department of Transportation begins operation. (1. April 1967)

Cosmonaut Vladimir Komarov dies in Soyuz 1 when its parachute fails to open. He is the first human to die during a space mission. (24. April 1967)

The supertanker Torrey Canyon ran aground off the Cornish coast. (18. March 1967)

Vietnam War: American General William Westmoreland says in a news conference that the enemy had "gained support in the United States that gives him hope that he can win politically that which he cannot win militarily." (24. April 1967)

Andreas Papandreou, Greek economist and socialist politician, is imprisoned in Athens by the Greek military junta. (11. May 1967)

Egypt closes the Straits of Tiran and blockades the port of Eilat at the northern end of the Gulf of Aqaba to Israeli shipping. (23. May 1967)

Ten thousand people gather for one of many Central Park be-ins in New York City (26. March 1967)

Trans World Airlines Flight 553, a Douglas DC-9-15, crashes in a field in Concord Township, Ohio following a mid-air collision with a Beechcraft Baron, killing 26. (9. March 1967)

Lunar Orbiter program: Lunar Orbiter 3 lifts off from Cape Canaveral's Launch Complex 13 on its mission to identify possible landing sites for the Surveyor and Apollo spacecraft. (4. February 1967)

The Popular Movement of the Revolution political party is established in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. (20. May 1967)

The first Boeing 737 (a 100 series) makes its maiden flight. (9. April 1967)

The L'Innovation department store in the center of Brussels, Belgium, burns down. It is the most devastating fire in Belgian history, resulting in 323 dead and missing and 150 injured. (22. May 1967)

Martin Luther King, Jr. delivers his "Beyond Vietnam: A Time to Break Silence" speech in New York City's Riverside Church. (4. April 1967)

The 25th Amendment to the United States Constitution is ratified. (10. February 1967)

American researchers discover the Madrid Codices by Leonardo da Vinci in the National Library of Spain. (13. February 1967)

Egypt imposes a blockade and siege of the Red Sea coast of Israel. (24. May 1967)

Dr. Zakir Hussain becomes the third President of India. He is the first Muslim President of the Indian Union. He holds this position until August 24, 1969. (13. May 1967)
