A car bomb explodes in the Indonesian capital of Jakarta outside the Marriott Hotel killing 12 and injuring 150. (5. August 2003)

Iraq War: In Fallujah, U.S. forces mistakenly shoot and kill eight Iraqi police officers. (12. September 2003)

The Human Genome Project is completed with 99% of the human genome sequenced to an accuracy of 99.99%. (14. April 2003)

Zoran Đinđić, Prime Minister of Serbia, is assassinated in Belgrade. (12. March 2003)

An electricity blackout cuts off power to around 500,000 people living in south east England and brings 60% of London's underground rail network to a halt. (28. August 2003)

In a friendly fire incident, two A-10 Thunderbolt II attack aircraft from the United States Idaho Air National Guard's 190th Fighter Squadron attack British tanks participating in the 2003 invasion of Iraq, killing British soldier Matty Hull. (28. March 2003)

Delta Goodrem diagnosed with Hodgkin's Lymphoma. (8. July 2003)

Battle of Nasiriyah, first major conflict during the invasion of Iraq. (23. March 2003)

The International Criminal Court holds its inaugural session in The Hague. (1. March 2003)

The 70-metre Eupatoria Planetary Radar sends a METI message (Cosmic Call 2) to 5 stars: Hip 4872, HD 245409, 55 Cancri (HD 75732), HD 10307 and 47 Ursae Majoris (HD 95128). The messages will arrive to these stars in 2036, 2040, 2044 and 2049 respectively. (6. July 2003)

A historic recall election takes place in the U.S. State of California in which the sitting Governor Gray Davis, a Democrat, is overwhelmingly voted out of office. Actor, bodybuilder and Republican candidate Arnold Schwarzenegger is elected to be the 38th Governor of California over fellow Republican Tom McClintock and Democrat Cruz Bustamante who at the time was the sitting Lt. Governor of California. This is the first recall election in the history of the State of California in which a sitting Governor has been successfully recalled from office. (7. October 2003)

Yuri Malenchenko becomes the first person to marry in space. (10. August 2003)

Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs Robin Cook, resigns from the British Cabinet in disagreement with government plans for the 2003 invasion of Iraq. (17. March 2003)

Anna Lindh, the foreign minister of Sweden, is fatally stabbed while shopping, and dies the following day. (10. September 2003)

Peter Hollingworth becomes the first Governor-General of Australia to resign his office as a result of criticism of his conduct. (28. May 2003)

In an effort to discredit U.S. Ambassador Joseph C. Wilson, who had written an article critical of the 2003 invasion of Iraq, Washington Post columnist Robert Novak reveals that Wilson's wife Valerie Plame is a CIA "operative". (14. July 2003)

NASA Opportunity rover, MER-B or Mars Exploration Rover – B, was launched into space aboard a Delta II rocket. (7. July 2003)
