First flight of Supermarine Spitfire advanced monoplane fighter aircraft in the United Kingdom. (5. March 1936)

Initial flight of the Focke-Wulf Fw 61, the first practical helicopter. (26. June 1936)

First ascent of Siniolchu by a German team. (23. September 1936)

The International Surrealist Exhibition opens in London, England. (11. June 1936)

The first all-sound film version of Show Boat opens at Radio City Music Hall. (There had been a part-talkie, part-silent version of Show Boat in 1929.) (14. March 1936)

Odisha formerly known as Kalinga or Utkal becomes a state in India. (1. April 1936)

The Canadian Broadcasting Corporation is established. (2. November 1936)

The British Broadcasting Corporation initiates the BBC Television Service, the world's first regular, "high-definition" (then defined as at least 200 lines) service. Renamed BBC1 in 1964, the channel still runs to this day. (2. November 1936)

Summer Olympic Games: Games of the XI Olympiad – Jesse Owens wins his fourth gold medal at the games becoming the first American to win four medals in one Olympiad. (9. August 1936)

The Jarrow March sets off for London. (5. October 1936)

Bruno Richard Hauptmann is executed for the kidnapping and death of Charles Augustus Lindbergh, Jr., the baby son of pilot Charles Lindbergh. (3. April 1936)

The Axis powers decide to intervene in the Spanish Civil War. (26. July 1936)

Italian troops occupy Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. (5. May 1936)

The Steel Workers Organizing Committee, a trade union, was founded in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Philip Murray was elected its first president. (7. June 1936)

Jesse Owens wins the 100 meter dash, defeating Ralph Metcalfe, at the Berlin Olympics. (3. August 1936)

The Japanese puppet state of Mengjiang is formed in northern China. (28. June 1936)
