The Austro-Hungarian battleship SMS Szent István sinks off the Croatian coast after being torpedoed by an Italian MAS motorboat; the event is recorded by camera from a nearby vessel. (10. June 1918)

U-156 shells Nauset Beach, in Orleans, Massachusetts. (21. July 1918)

World War I: The Battle of the Lys – the Portuguese Expeditionary Corps is crushed by the German forces during what is called the Spring Offensive on the Belgian region of Flanders. (9. April 1918)

The RMS Carpathia, the ship that rescued the 705 survivors from the RMS Titanic, is sunk off Ireland by the German SM U-55; 5 lives are lost. (17. July 1918)

Germany, Austria and Russia sign the Treaty of Brest-Litovsk ending Russia's involvement in World War I, and leading to the independence of Finland, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania and Poland. (3. March 1918)

The National Council of Bessarabia proclaims union with the Kingdom of Romania. (9. April 1918)

General Motors acquires the Chevrolet Motor Company of Delaware. (2. May 1918)

Armenia defeats the Ottoman Army in the Battle of Sardarabad. (29. May 1918)

Daylight saving time goes into effect in the United States for the first time. (31. March 1918)

World War I, Western Front: Battle for Belleau Wood – Allied Forces under John J. Pershing and James Harbord defeat Imperial German Forces under Wilhelm, German Crown Prince. (26. June 1918)

World War I: The British Royal Navy makes a raid in an attempt to neutralise the Belgian port of Bruges-Zeebrugge. (23. April 1918)

The Royal Air Force is created by the merger of the Royal Flying Corps and the Royal Naval Air Service. (1. April 1918)
