A bomb explodes on Pan Am Flight 830, en route from Tokyo, Japan to Honolulu, Hawaii, killing one teenager and injuring 15 passengers. (11. August 1982)

The first Compact Discs (CDs) are released to the public in Germany. (17. August 1982)

268 campesinos ("peasants" or "country people") are slain in the Plan de Sánchez massacre in Ríos Montt's Guatemala. (18. July 1982)

Falklands War: Argentina invades the Falkland Islands. (2. April 1982)

NASA's Space Shuttle Columbia, is launched from the Kennedy Space Center on its third mission, STS-3. (22. March 1982)

During a procession outside the shrine of the Virgin Mary in Fátima, Portugal, security guards overpower Juan María Fernández y Krohn before he can attack Pope John Paul II with a bayonet. Krohn, an ultraconservative Spanish priest opposed to the Vatican II reforms, believed that the Pope had to be killed for being an "agent of Moscow". (12. May 1982)

Falklands War: British forces defeat the Argentines at the Battle of Goose Green. (29. May 1982)

Bachir Gemayel is elected Lebanese President amidst the raging civil war. (23. August 1982)

In one of the first militant attacks by Hezbollah, David S. Dodge, president of the American University in Beirut, is kidnapped. (19. June 1982)

A groundbreaking ceremony for the Vietnam Veterans Memorial is held in Washington, D.C.. (26. March 1982)

Greece abolishes the head shaving of recruits in the military. (25. June 1982)

Turkish military diplomat Colonel Atilla Altıkat is shot and killed in Ottawa, Canada's capital city. Justice Commandos Against Armenian Genocide claim responsibility, saying they are avenging the massacre of 1.5 million Armenians in the 1915 Armenian Genocide. (27. August 1982)

Pan Am Flight 759 crashes in Kenner, Louisiana killing all 145 people on board and eight others on the ground. (9. July 1982)

The Sentosa Musical Fountain was officially opened as part of the second phase of construction on the island of Sentosa, Singapore. (11. June 1982)

Estonian Communist Party bureau declares "fight against bourgeois TV"—meaning Finnish TV—a top priority of the propagandists of Estonian SSR (6. April 1982)
