The Prime Minister of Spain, Admiral Luis Carrero Blanco, is assassinated by a car bomb attack in Madrid. (20. December 1973)

U.S. President Richard Nixon signs the Trans-Alaska Pipeline Authorization Act into law, authorizing the construction of the Alaska Pipeline. (16. November 1973)

A British Vickers Vanguard turboprop aircraft crashed in a snowstorm at Basel, Switzerland killing 104 people. (10. April 1973)

Yom Kippur War: Gabi Amir's armored brigade attacks Egyptian occupied positions on the Israeli side of the Suez Canal, in hope of driving them away. The attack fails, and over 150 Israeli tanks are destroyed. (8. October 1973)

Martin Cooper of Motorola makes the first handheld mobile phone call to Joel S. Engel of Bell Labs, though it took ten years for the DynaTAC 8000X to become the first such phone to be commercially released. (3. April 1973)

The Athens Polytechnic uprising against the military regime ends in a bloodshed in the Greek capital. (17. November 1973)

A fire at a house in Hull, England which kills a six year old boy is passed off as an accident; it later emerges as the first of 26 deaths by fire caused over the next seven years by arsonist Peter Dinsdale. (23. June 1973)

The Cañon City meteorite, a 1.4 kg chondrite type meteorite, strikes in Fremont County, Colorado. (27. October 1973)

A bank robbery gone wrong in Stockholm, Sweden, turns into a hostage crisis; over the next five days the hostages begin to sympathise with their captors, leading to the term "Stockholm syndrome". (23. August 1973)
