World War II – Fuehrerbunker: Adolf Hitler marries his longtime partner Eva Braun in a Berlin bunker and designates Admiral Karl Dönitz as his successor. Both Hitler and Braun commit suicide the following day. (29. April 1945)

World War II: The Battle of Poljana, the final skirmish in Europe is fought near Prevalje, Slovenia. (15. May 1945)

August Revolution: Viet Minh led by Ho Chi Minh take power in Hanoi, Vietnam. (19. August 1945)

Second Sino-Japanese War: The Empire of Japan formally surrenders to China. (9. September 1945)

World War II: Ratification in Berlin-Karlshorst of the German unconditional surrender of May 8 in Rheims, France, with the signatures of Marshal Georgy Zhukov for the Soviet Union, and for the Western Headquarters Sir Arthur Tedder, British Air Marshal and Eisenhower's deputy, and for the German side of Colonel-General Hans-Jürgen Stumpff as the representative of the Luftwaffe, Field Marshal Wilhelm Keitel as the Chief of Staff of OKW, and Admiral Hans-Georg von Friedeburg as Commander-in-Chief of the Kriegsmarine. Cold War: Igor Gouzenko, a Soviet Union embassy clerk, defects to Canada, exposing Soviet espionage in North America, signalling the beginning of the Cold War. (5. September 1945)

World War II: Filipino troops of the 66th Infantry Regiment, Philippine Commonwealth Army, USAFIP-NL and the American troops of the 33rd and 37th Infantry Division, United States Army are liberated in Baguio City and they fight against the Japanese forces under General Tomoyuki Yamashita. (26. April 1945)

The Supreme Commander of the Allied Forces, General Douglas MacArthur lands at Atsugi Air Force Base. (30. August 1945)

World War II: Denmark is granted liberation, when Germany was forced to step out of Denmark thus ending 5 years of occupation. (4. May 1945)

World War II: The heavy cruiser USS Indianapolis leaves San Francisco with parts for the atomic bomb "Little Boy" bound for Tinian Island. (16. July 1945)

World War II: The Captain class frigate HMS Goodall K479 is torpedoed by U-286 outside the Kola Inlet becoming the last ship of the Royal Navy sunk in the European theatre of World War II. (29. April 1945)

The United States Secretary of State approves the transfer of Wernher von Braun and his team of Nazi rocket scientists to America. (20. June 1945)

World War II: Canadian and British troops liberate the Netherlands and Denmark from German occupation when Wehrmacht troops capitulate. (5. May 1945)

World War II: General Alfred Jodl signs unconditional surrender terms at Reims, France, ending Germany's participation in the war. The document takes effect the next day. (7. May 1945)

Ten days after World War II ends with Japan announcing its surrender, armed supporters of the Chinese Communist Party kill U.S. intelligence officer John Birch, regarded by some of the American right as the first victim of the Cold War. (25. August 1945)
