Vietnam War: The United States uses B-52 bombers to attack National Liberation Front guerrilla fighters in South Vietnam. (18. June 1965)

The Aero Spacelines Super Guppy aircraft makes its first flight. (31. August 1965)

Race riots (the Watts Riots) begin in the Watts area of Los Angeles, California. (11. August 1965)

The Beatles play to nearly 60,000 fans at Shea Stadium in New York, New York, an event later regarded as the birth of stadium rock. (15. August 1965)

A fire at a Titan missile base near Searcy, Arkansas kills 53 construction workers. (9. August 1965)

Vietnam War: The Catholic Worker Movement stages an anti-war rally in Manhattan including a public burning of a draft card; the first such act to result in arrest under a new amendment to the Selective Service Act. (15. October 1965)

The Indo-Pakistani War of 1965 (also known as the Second Kashmir War) between India and Pakistan over Kashmir, ends after the UN calls for a cease-fire. (22. September 1965)

Singapore is expelled from Malaysia and becomes the only country to date to gain independence unwillingly. (9. August 1965)

Duane Earl Pope robs the Farmers' State Bank of Big Springs, Nebraska, killing three people execution-style and severely wounding a fourth. The crime later puts Pope on the FBI Ten Most Wanted list. (4. June 1965)

Nostra Aetate, the "Declaration on the Relation of the Church with Non-Christian Religions" of the Second Vatican Council, is promulgated by Pope Paul VI; it absolves the Jews of responsibility for the death of Jesus, reversing Innocent III's 760 year-old declaration. (28. October 1965)

U.S. President Lyndon B. Johnson signs the Social Security Act of 1965 into law, establishing Medicare and Medicaid. (30. July 1965)

Vietnam War: U.S. President Lyndon B. Johnson announces his order to increase the number of United States troops in South Vietnam from 75,000 to 125,000. (28. July 1965)

Vietnam War: Operation Starlite begins – United States Marines destroy a Viet Cong stronghold on the Van Tuong peninsula in the first major American ground battle of the war. (18. August 1965)

Vietnam War: In a follow-up to August's Operation Starlight, United States Marines and South Vietnamese forces initiate Operation Piranha on the Batangan Peninsula. (7. September 1965)

The infamous first Reyes party between Ken Kesey's Merry Pranksters and motorcycle gang the Hells Angels takes place at Kesey's estate in La Honda, California introducing psychedelics to the gang world and forever linking the hippie movement to the Hell's Angels. (7. August 1965)

In Rhodesia (modern-day Zimbabwe), the white-minority government of Ian Smith unilaterally declares independence. (11. November 1965)

The 173rd Airborne is ambushed by over 1,200 Viet Cong in Operation Hump during the Vietnam War, while the 1st Battalion, Royal Australian Regiment fight one of the first set-piece engagements of the war between Australian forces and the Vietcong at the Battle of Gang Toi. (8. November 1965)
