The Supreme Soviet of the Belarusian Soviet Republic declares independence of Belarus from the Soviet Union. Until 1996 the day is celebrated as the Independence Day of Belarus; after a referendum held that year the celebration of independence is moved to June 3. (27. July 1990)

George H. W. Bush and Mikhail Gorbachev sign a treaty to end chemical weapon production. (1. June 1990)

Armenia declares its independence from the Soviet Union. (23. August 1990)

The Georgian Soviet Socialist Republic holds the first multiparty legislature election in the country's history. (28. October 1990)

Space Shuttle program: Space Shuttle Atlantis launches with flight STS-38. (15. November 1990)

France announces it will send 4,000 troops to the Persian Gulf. (15. September 1990)
