World War II: The Battle of Cherbourg ends with the fall of the strategically valuable port to American forces. (30. June 1944)

World War II: Claus von Stauffenberg and fellow conspirators are executed in Berlin, Germany for the July 20 plot to assassinate Adolf Hitler. (21. July 1944)

World War II: Germany launches a V1 Flying Bomb attack on England. Only four of the eleven bombs actually hit their targets. (13. June 1944)

The Hartford Circus Fire, one of America's worst fire disasters, kills approximately 168 people and injures over 700 in Hartford, Connecticut. (6. July 1944)

World War II: Battle of Saipan: The United States invade Japanese-occupied Saipan. (15. June 1944)

World War II: the Battle of Normandy begins. D-Day, code named Operation Overlord, commences with the landing of 155,000 Allied troops on the beaches of Normandy in France. The allied soldiers quickly break through the Atlantic Wall and push inland in the largest amphibious military operation in history. (6. June 1944)

U.S. President Franklin D. Roosevelt signs into law the Servicemen's Readjustment Act of 1944, commonly known as the G.I. Bill. (22. June 1944)

USS Missouri (BB-63) the last battleship built by the United States Navy and future site of the signing of the Japanese Instrument of Surrender, is commissioned. (11. June 1944)

The final page of the comic Krazy Kat was published, exactly two months after its author George Herriman died. (25. June 1944)

World War II: United States Navy and Royal Navy ships bombard Cherbourg to support United States Army units engaged in the Battle of Cherbourg. (25. June 1944)

World War II: After several failed attempts, the British Army abandons Operation Perch, its plan to capture the German-occupied town of Caen. (14. June 1944)

World War II: Rome falls to the Allies, the first Axis capital to fall. (4. June 1944)

World War II: Battle of Guam – American troops land on Guam starting the battle. It would end on August 10. (21. July 1944)

World War II: Napalm incendiary bombs are dropped for the first time by American P-38 pilots on a fuel depot at Coutances, near Saint-Lô, France. (17. July 1944)

World War II: Battle of Tali-Ihantala – Finland wins the Battle of Tali-Ihantala, the largest battle ever fought in northern Europe. The Red Army withdraws its troops from Ihantala and digs into a defensive position, thus ending the Vyborg–Petrozavodsk Offensive. (9. July 1944)

World War II: More than 1000 British bombers drop 5,000 tons of bombs on German gun batteries on the Normandy coast in preparation for D-Day. (5. June 1944)
