The Toronto Blue Jays set a record for the most home runs in a single game, hitting 10 of them. (14. September 1987)

King's Cross fire: In London, 31 people die in a fire at the city's busiest underground station, King's Cross St Pancras. (18. November 1987)

Two Chicago television stations are hijacked by an unknown pirate dressed as Max Headroom. (22. November 1987)

The United States Navy conducts Operation Nimble Archer, an attack on two Iranian oil platforms in the Persian Gulf. (19. October 1987)

The LTTE uses suicide attacks on the Sri Lankan Army for the first time. The Black Tigers were born and, in the following years, continued to kill with the tactic. (5. July 1987)

Start of Operation Pawan by Indian Peace Keeping Force in Sri Lanka that killed thousands of ethnic Tamil civilians and hundreds of Tamil Tigers & Indian Army soldiers. (11. October 1987)

Thai Airways Flight 365 crashes into the ocean near Ko Phuket, Thailand, killing all 83 aboard. (31. August 1987)

In France, former Gestapo chief Klaus Barbie (aka the "Butcher of Lyon") is convicted of crimes against humanity and sentenced to life imprisonment. (4. July 1987)

Typhoon Nina pummels the Philippines with category 5 winds of 165 mph and a surge that destroys entire villages. At least 1,036 deaths are attributed to the storm. (25. November 1987)

Black Monday - the Dow Jones Industrial Average falls by 22%, 508 points. (19. October 1987)

Sikh nationalists declares the independence of Khalistan from India; it is not internationally recognized. (7. October 1987)

A rare, class F4 tornado rips through Edmonton, Alberta, killing 27 people and causing $330 million in damage. (31. July 1987)

The Montreal Protocol is signed to protect the ozone layer from depletion. (16. September 1987)
