Ahmet Zogu declares Albania to be a monarchy and proclaims himself king. (1. September 1928)

The RNLI lifeboat Mary Stanford capsized in Rye Harbour with the loss of the entire 17 man crew. (15. November 1928)

Sir Alexander Fleming notices a bacteria-killing mold growing in his laboratory, discovering what later became known as penicillin. (28. September 1928)

SS Vestris sinks approximately 200 miles (320 km) off Hampton Roads, Virginia, killing at least 110 passengers, mostly women and children who die after the vessel is abandoned. (12. November 1928)

Release of the animated short Steamboat Willie, the first fully synchronized sound cartoon, directed by Walt Disney and Ub Iwerks, featuring the third appearances of cartoon characters Mickey Mouse and Minnie Mouse. This is considered by the Disney corporation to be Mickey's birthday. (18. November 1928)

Joseph Szigeti gives the first performance of Alfredo Casella's Violin Concerto. (8. October 1928)

The Republic of China is recognized by the United States. (27. September 1928)

Chiang Kai-Shek becomes Chairman of the Republic of China. (10. October 1928)

The Okeechobee hurricane strikes southeastern Florida, killing upwards of 2,500 people. It is the third deadliest natural disaster in United States history, behind the Galveston hurricane of 1900 and the 1906 San Francisco earthquake. (16. September 1928)

The Kellogg-Briand Pact outlawing war is signed by the first 15 nations to do so. Ultimately sixty-one nations will sign it. (27. August 1928)

Juan de la Cierva makes the first autogyro crossing of the English Channel. (18. September 1928)

The Soviet Union introduces its First Five-Year Plan. (1. October 1928)

The premier performance of Ravel's Boléro takes place in Paris. (22. November 1928)

Arnold Rothstein, the head of the Jewish mob in New York, was shot and mortally wounded on the 4 Nov., and died on 6 Nov.; He was assassinated by George "Hump" McManus, for failing to pay a large gambling debt. (6. November 1928)

The airship, Graf Zeppelin completes its first trans-Atlantic flight, landing at Lakehurst, New Jersey, United States. (15. October 1928)

Declaration of the Youth Pledge in Indonesia, the first time Indonesia Raya, now the national anthem, was sung. (28. October 1928)

An iron lung respirator is used for the first time at Children's Hospital, Boston (12. October 1928)

The U.K. Parliament passes the Dangerous Drugs Act outlawing cannabis. (28. September 1928)

The Law on the Adoption and Implementation of the Turkish Alphabet, replacing the version of the Arabic alphabet previously used with the Latin alphabet, comes into force in Turkey. (1. November 1928)
