Between 1,000 and 3,500 Palestinians are killed in the Tel al-Zaatar massacre, one of the bloodiest events of the Lebanese Civil War (12. August 1976)

Angola joins the United Nations. (1. December 1976)

Zulfikar Ali Bhutto lays the foundation stone of Port Qasim, Karachi. (6. August 1976)

The United Nations General Assembly adopts the Convention on the Prohibition of Military or Any Other Hostile Use of Environmental Modification Techniques. (10. December 1976)

Operation Paul Bunyan at Panmunjom, South Korea. (21. August 1976)

The oil tanker MV Argo Merchant runs aground near Nantucket, Massachusetts, causing one of the worst marine oil spills in history. (15. December 1976)

Red Dye No. 4 is banned by the US Food and Drug Administration after it is discovered that it causes tumors in the bladders of dogs. The dye is still used in Canada. (22. October 1976)

Viking program: The American Viking 2 spacecraft lands at Utopia Planitia on Mars. (3. September 1976)

The Communist Party of Nepal (Marxist–Leninist) is founded. (26. December 1976)

Western Samoa becomes a member of the United Nations. (15. December 1976)

A series of earthquakes spreads panic in the city of Thessaloniki, which is evacuated. (8. November 1976)

The 1976 Çaldıran-Muradiye earthquake in eastern Turkey kills between 4,000 and 5,000 people. (24. November 1976)

Hua Guofeng becomes Mao Zedong's successor as chairman of Communist Party of China, following the latter's death barely a month earlier. (7. October 1976)

A British Airways Hawker Siddeley Trident and an Inex-Adria DC-9 collide near Zagreb, Yugoslavia, killing 176. (10. September 1976)

Fidel Castro becomes President of Cuba, replacing Osvaldo Dorticós Torrado. (2. December 1976)

Orlando Letelier is assassinated in Washington, D.C. He is a member of the Chilean socialist government of Salvador Allende, overthrown in 1973 by Augusto Pinochet. (21. September 1976)

Massacre of students gathering at Thammasat University in Bangkok, Thailand, to protest the return of ex-dictator Thanom, by a coalition of right-wing paramilitary and government forces, triggering the return of the military to government. (6. October 1976)
