After protests against the burning of the Quran turn violent, a mob attacks a United Nations compound in Mazar-i-Sharif, Afghanistan, resulting in the deaths of thirteen people, including eight foreign workers. (1. April 2011)

A rare tornado outbreak occurs in New England; a strong EF3 tornado strikes Springfield, Massachusetts, during the event, killing four people. (1. June 2011)

A march in protest of the death of Mark Duggan in Tottenham, London, ends in a riot, sparking off a wave of rioting throughout the country over the following four nights. (6. August 2011)

The attempted assassination of Arizona Representative Gabrielle Giffords and subsequent shooting in Casas Adobes, Arizona at a Safeway grocery store, for which Jared Lee Loughner is subsequently arrested, kills six people and wounds 13, including Giffords. (8. January 2011)

The first wave of the Egyptian revolution culminates in the resignation of Hosni Mubarak and the transfer of power to the Supreme Military Council after 18 days of protests. (11. February 2011)

Norway is the victim of twin terror attacks, the first being a bomb blast which targeted government buildings in central Oslo, the second being a massacre at a youth camp on the island of Utøya. (22. July 2011)

22 people are killed when Sol Líneas Aéreas Flight 5428 crashes in southern Argentina. (18. May 2011)

Libyan protests begin. In Bahrain, security forces launched a deadly pre-dawn raid on protesters in Pearl Roundabout in Manama, the day is locally known as Bloody Thursday. (17. February 2011)

A explosion in the Minsk Metro, Belarus kills 15 people and injures 204 others. (11. April 2011)

2011 NATO attack in Pakistan: NATO forces in Afghanistan attack a Pakistani checkpost in a friendly fire incident, killing 24 soldiers and wounding 13 others. (26. November 2011)

Radio broadcaster Harold Camping predicted that the end of the world would occur on this day, a prophecy that would prove incorrect. (21. May 2011)

The global population of humans reaches seven billion. This day is now recognized by the United Nations as Seven Billion Day. (31. October 2011)
