Emily Davison, a suffragette, runs out in front of King George V's horse, Anmer, at the Epsom Derby. She is trampled, never regains consciousness and dies a few days later. (4. June 1913)

Grand Central Terminal is opened in New York City. (2. February 1913)

First Balkan War: During the Battle of Lemnos, Greek admiral Pavlos Kountouriotis forces the Turkish fleet to retreat to its base within the Dardanelles, from which it did not venture for the rest of the war. (5. January 1913)

First Balkan War: The Greek army engages the Turks at Bizani, resulting in victory two days later. (4. March 1913)

First Balkan War: A Greek flotilla defeats the Ottoman Navy in the Naval Battle of Lemnos, securing the islands of the Northern Aegean Sea for Greece. (18. January 1913)

Roland Garros of France becomes the first to fly in an airplane across the Mediterranean (from St. Raphael France to Bizerte, Tunisia). (23. September 1913)

Thousands of women march in a suffrage parade in Washington, D.C. (3. March 1913)

King O'Malley drives in the first survey peg to mark commencement of work on the construction of Canberra. (20. February 1913)

The British Board of Censors is established. (1. January 1913)

American Civil War veterans begin arriving at the Great Reunion of 1913. (25. June 1913)

Tōhoku Imperial University of Japan (modern day Tohoku University) becomes the first university in Japan to admit female students. (16. August 1913)

First production in the UK of stainless steel by Harry Brearley. (13. August 1913)

Second Balkan War: The Greeks defeat the Bulgarians in the Battle of Doiran. (23. June 1913)

The British House of Lords rejects the Irish Home Rule Bill. (30. January 1913)

Canberra Day: The future capital of Australia is officially named Canberra. (Melbourne remains temporary capital until 1927 while the new capital is still under construction.) (12. March 1913)

The Armory Show opens in New York City, displaying works of artists who are to become some of the most influential painters of the early 20th century. (17. February 1913)

The Nevill Ground's pavilion is destroyed in a suffragette arson attack becoming the only cricket ground to be attacked by suffragettes. (11. April 1913)

Over 360 are killed and 20,000 homes destroyed in the Great Dayton Flood in Dayton, Ohio. (21. March 1913)

Balkan War: Bulgarian forces capture Adrianople. (26. March 1913)
