Apollo Program: Launch of AS-201, the first flight of the Saturn IB rocket (26. February 1966)

The United States Supreme Court rules in Miranda v. Arizona that the police must inform suspects of their rights before questioning them. (13. June 1966)

The Communist Party of China issues the "May 16 Notice", marking the beginning of the Cultural Revolution. (16. May 1966)

The Severn Bridge is officially opened by Queen Elizabeth II. (8. September 1966)

Vietnam War: The House Un-American Activities Committee begins investigations of Americans who have aided the Viet Cong. The committee intends to introduce legislation making these activities illegal. Anti-war demonstrators disrupt the meeting and 50 people are arrested. (16. August 1966)

The first color television transmission in Canada takes place from Toronto. (1. July 1966)

The Supremes become the first all-female music group to attain a No. 1 selling album (The Supremes A' Go-Go). (22. October 1966)

Texas Western becomes the first college basketball team to win the Final Four with an all-black starting lineup. (19. March 1966)

An earthquake of magnitude 7.5 destroys Tashkent. (26. April 1966)

The former Congolese Prime Minister, Évariste Kimba, and several other politicians are publicly executed in Kinshasa on the orders of President Joseph Mobutu. (30. May 1966)

Basutoland becomes independent from the United Kingdom and is renamed Lesotho. (4. October 1966)

A fire at a building in New York City kills 12 firefighters, the fire department's deadliest day until the September 11, 2001 attacks. (17. October 1966)

Surveyor program: Surveyor 1 lands in Oceanus Procellarum on the Moon, becoming the first U.S. spacecraft to soft-land on another world. (2. June 1966)

The Church of Satan is established at the Black House in San Francisco, California. (30. April 1966)

The Chicago Freedom Movement, led by Martin Luther King, Jr., holds a rally at Soldier Field in Chicago, Illinois. As many as 60,000 people come to hear Dr. King as well as Mahalia Jackson, Stevie Wonder, and Peter Paul and Mary. (10. July 1966)

In Syria, Ba'ath Party member Salah Jadid leads an intra-party military coup that replaces the previous government of General Amin Hafiz, also a Baathist. (23. February 1966)

Black Panther Party is created by Huey P. Newton and Bobby Seale. (15. October 1966)
