End of a four day long Libyan–Egyptian War. (24. July 1977)

New York, New York, amidst a period of financial and social turmoil experiences an electrical blackout lasting nearly 24 hours that leads to widespread fires and looting. (13. July 1977)

The George Jackson Brigade plants a bomb at the main power substation for the Washington state capitol in Olympia, in solidarity with a prison strike at the Walla Walla State Penitentiary Intensive Security Unit (4. July 1977)

Oracle Corporation is incorporated in Redwood Shores, California, as Software Development Laboratories (SDL) by Larry Ellison, Bob Miner and Ed Oates. (16. June 1977)

Star Wars (retitled Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope in 1981) is released in theaters, inspiring the Jediism religion and Geek Pride Day holiday. (25. May 1977)

Martin Luther King, Jr. is posthumously awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom. (11. July 1977)

German Federal prosecutor Siegfried Buback and his driver are shot by two Red Army Faction members while waiting at a red light. (7. April 1977)

A coup takes place in Seychelles. (5. June 1977)

The 1977 Vrancea earthquake in eastern and southern Europe kills more than 1,500, mostly in the seriously damaged city of Bucharest, Romania. (4. March 1977)

Alexandr Zagirnyak and Gennadi Sheludko hijack a Tupolev Tu-134 en route from Petrozavodsk to Leningrad and try to force the pilot to fly to Sweden. The plane lands in Helsinki instead. The hijackers surrender the next day and are returned to the Soviet Union. (10. July 1977)

London Transport's Silver Jubilee buses are launched. (11. April 1977)

Chinese leader Deng Xiaoping is restored to power. (22. July 1977)

Tenerife airport disaster: Two Boeing 747 airliners collide on a foggy runway on Tenerife in the Canary Islands, killing 583 (all 248 on KLM and 335 on Pan Am). 61 survived on the Pan Am flight. This is the worst aviation accident in history. (27. March 1977)

Somalia declares war on Ethiopia, starting the Ethiopian-Somali War. (13. July 1977)

The Yorkshire Ripper kills 16 year old shop assistant Jayne MacDonald in Leeds, changing public perception of the killer as she is the first victim who is not a prostitute. (26. June 1977)

Bülent Ecevit, of the CHP forms the new government of Turkey. (21. June 1977)

Chinese government removes a decade old ban on William Shakespeare's work, effectively ending the Cultural Revolution started in 1966. (25. May 1977)
