The Simele massacre: The Iraqi government slaughters over 3,000 Assyrians in the village of Simele. The day becomes known as Assyrian Martyrs Day. (7. August 1933)

Great Depression: Banks in the U.S. begin to re-open after President Franklin D. Roosevelt mandates a "bank holiday". (13. March 1933)

The recently elected Nazis under Julius Streicher organize a one-day boycott of all Jewish-owned businesses in Germany, ushering in a series of anti-Semitic acts. (1. April 1933)

Giuseppe Zangara is executed in Florida's electric chair for fatally shooting Anton Cermak in an assassination attempt against President-Elect Franklin D. Roosevelt. (20. March 1933)

U.S. Navy airship, USS Akron, is wrecked off the New Jersey coast due to severe weather. (4. April 1933)

The Congress of the United States proposes the Twenty-first Amendment to the United States Constitution that will end Prohibition in the United States. (20. February 1933)

Nazi Germany begins its persecution of Jehovah's Witnesses by shutting down the Watch Tower Society office in Magdeburg. (24. April 1933)

The Nazi eugenics begins with the proclamation of the Law for the Prevention of Hereditarily Diseased Offspring that calls for the compulsory sterilization of any citizen who suffers from alleged genetic disorders. (14. July 1933)

Great Depression: Franklin D. Roosevelt addresses the nation for the first time as President of the United States. This is also the first of his "fireside chats". (12. March 1933)

Great Depression: President Franklin D. Roosevelt declares a "bank holiday", closing all U.S. banks and freezing all financial transactions. (5. March 1933)

Wiley Post becomes the first person to fly solo around the world traveling 15,596 miles (25,099 km) in 7 days, 18 hours and 45 minutes. (22. July 1933)

Reichstag fire: Germany's parliament building in Berlin, the Reichstag, is set on fire. (27. February 1933)

Construction of Dachau, the first Nazi concentration camp, is completed. (21. March 1933)

The Parliament of Austria is suspended because of a quibble over procedure – Chancellor Engelbert Dollfuss initiates an authoritarian rule by decree. (4. March 1933)

Adolf Hitler's Nazi Party receives 43.9% at the Reichstag elections. This later allows the Nazis to pass the Enabling Act and establish a dictatorship. (5. March 1933)

New Deal: The U.S. Federal Securities Act is signed into law requiring the registration of securities with the Federal Trade Commission. (27. May 1933)
