Prince Norodom Sihanouk resigns as leader of Cambodia and is placed under house arrest. (4. April 1976)

Air France Flight 139 (Tel Aviv-Athens-Paris) is hijacked en route to Paris by the PLO and redirected to Entebbe, Uganda. (27. June 1976)

The London to Washington, D.C., Concorde service begins. (24. May 1976)

Red Dye No. 4 is banned by the US Food and Drug Administration after it is discovered that it causes tumors in the bladders of dogs. The dye is still used in Canada. (22. October 1976)

The first electron micrograph of an Ebola viral particle is obtained by Dr. F.A. Murphy, now at U.C. Davis, who was then working at the C.D.C. (13. October 1976)

Cubana Flight 455 crashes into the Atlantic Ocean shortly after taking off from Bridgetown, Barbados, after two bombs, placed on board by terrorists with connections to the CIA, exploded. All 73 people on board are killed. (6. October 1976)

Missouri Governor Kit Bond issues an executive order rescinding the Extermination Order, formally apologizing on behalf of the state of Missouri for the suffering it had caused to the members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. (25. June 1976)

Japan completes its last reparation to the Philippines for war crimes committed during the imperial Japan's conquest of the country in the Second World War (22. July 1976)

The first Space Shuttle, Enterprise, is unveiled by NASA. (17. September 1976)

Soweto uprising: a non-violent march by 15,000 students in Soweto, South Africa turns into days of rioting when police open fire on the crowd. (16. June 1976)

Turkish Airlines Flight 452 hits the Taurus Mountains, outskirt of Karatepe, Osmaniye, Turkey, killing all 154 passengers and crew. (19. September 1976)

In New York, New York, David Berkowitz (aka the "Son of Sam") kills one person and seriously wounds another in the first of a series of attacks. (29. July 1976)

Capital punishment is abolished in Canada. (14. July 1976)

An earthquake strikes the Friuli region of northeastern Italy, causing 989 deaths and the destruction of entire villages. (6. May 1976)

The Northern Ireland Constitutional Convention is formally dissolved in Northern Ireland resulting in direct rule of Northern Ireland from London by the British parliament. (4. March 1976)

A Bolivian Boeing 707 cargo jet crashes in Santa Cruz, Bolivia, killing 100 (97, mostly children, killed on the ground). (13. October 1976)

Seychelles joins the United Nations. (21. September 1976)

Former British Cabinet Minister John Stonehouse resigns from the Labour Party. (7. April 1976)

Zulfikar Ali Bhutto lays the foundation stone of Port Qasim, Karachi. (6. August 1976)
