World War II: Führerbunker: After learning that Soviet forces have taken Eberswalde without a fight, Adolf Hitler admits defeat in his underground bunker and states that suicide is his only recourse. (22. April 1945)

August Revolution: Viet Minh led by Ho Chi Minh take power in Hanoi, Vietnam. (19. August 1945)

Benito Mussolini and his mistress Clara Petacci are executed by a firing squad consisting of members of the Italian resistance movement. (28. April 1945)

World War II: The heavy cruiser USS Indianapolis leaves San Francisco with parts for the atomic bomb "Little Boy" bound for Tinian Island. (16. July 1945)

World War II: Filipino troops of the 66th Infantry Regiment, Philippine Commonwealth Army, USAFIP-NL and the American troops of the 33rd and 37th Infantry Division, United States Army are liberated in Baguio City and they fight against the Japanese forces under General Tomoyuki Yamashita. (26. April 1945)

Women's suffrage: Women are allowed to vote in France for the first time. (21. October 1945)

World War II: Off the coast of Okinawa, the aircraft carrier USS Bunker Hill is hit by two kamikazes, killing 346 of its crew. Although badly damaged, the ship is able to return to the U.S. under its own power. (11. May 1945)

World War II: The Battle of Iwo Jima ends as the island is officially secured by American forces. (26. March 1945)

The official North Korean newspaper, Rodong Sinmun, is first published under the name Chongro. (1. November 1945)

U.S. President Franklin D. Roosevelt dies while in office; vice-president Harry Truman is sworn in as the 33rd President. (12. April 1945)

Sukarno and Mohammad Hatta proclaim the independence of Indonesia, igniting the Indonesian National Revolution against the Dutch Empire. (17. August 1945)

Jackie Robinson of the Kansas City Monarchs signs a contract for the Brooklyn Dodgers to break the baseball color barrier. (30. October 1945)

Osijek, Croatia, is liberated from fascist occupation. (14. April 1945)

The Yugoslav partisans free Trieste. (1. May 1945)

World War II: Soviet Union forces invade Austria and take Vienna; Polish and Soviet forces liberate Danzig. (30. March 1945)

Cold War: United States troops arrive to partition the southern part of Korea in response to Soviet troops occupying the northern part of the peninsula a month earlier. (8. September 1945)

Carpathian Ruthenia is annexed by the Soviet Union. (29. June 1945)
