Winnenden school shooting: 16 are killed and 11 are injured before recent-graduate Tim Kretschmer shoots and kills himself, leading to tightened weapons restrictions in Germany. (11. March 2009)

Washington Metro train collision: Two Metro trains collide in Washington, D.C., USA, killing nine and injuring over 80. (22. June 2009)

Jakarta double bombings at the JW Marriott and Ritz-Carlton Hotels kill nine people including four foreigners. (17. July 2009)

Sri Lankan Civil War: The LTTE are defeated by the Sri Lankan government, ending almost 26 years of fighting between the two sides. (18. May 2009)

Honduran president Manuel Zelaya is ousted by a local military coup following a failed request to hold a referendum to rewrite the Honduran Constitution. This was the start of the 2009 Honduran political crisis. (28. June 2009)

A disputed presidential election in Iran leads to wide ranging protests in Iran and around the world. (12. June 2009)

The Supreme Court of the United Kingdom takes over the judicial functions of the House of Lords. (1. October 2009)

North Korea allegedly tests its second nuclear device. Following the nuclear test, Pyongyang also conducted several missile tests building tensions in the international community. (25. May 2009)

2009 Nevsky Express bombing: A bomb explodes on the Nevsky Express train between Moscow and Saint Petersburg, derailing it and causing 28 deaths and 96 injuries. (27. November 2009)

Situ Gintung, an artificial lake in Indonesia, fails, killing at least 99 people. (27. March 2009)

A fire at a day-care center kills at least 40 people in Hermosillo, Mexico. (5. June 2009)

Iranian election protests: On the Day of Ashura in Tehran, Iran, government security forces fire upon demonstrators. (27. December 2009)

Seven people are killed and 17 injured at a Queen's Day parade in Apeldoorn, Netherlands in an attempted assassination on Queen Beatrix. (30. April 2009)

The Historical Archive of the City of Cologne collapses. (3. March 2009)

The International Criminal Court (ICC) issues an arrest warrant for Sudanese President Omar Hassan al-Bashir for war crimes and crimes against humanity in Darfur. Al-Bashir is the first sitting head of state to be indicted by the ICC since its establishment in 2002. (4. March 2009)

Twenty people are killed in Handlová, Trenčín Region, in the deadliest mining disaster in Slovakia's history. (10. August 2009)

The Acropolis Museum in Athens, Greece opens to the public. (20. June 2009)
