Honduras becomes a signatory to the Buenos Aires copyright treaty. (27. April 1914)

Austria-Hungary issues a series of demands in an ultimatum to the Kingdom of Serbia demanding Serbia to allow the Austrians to determine who assassinated Archduke Franz Ferdinand. Serbia will accept all but one of those demands and Austria will declare war on July 28. (23. July 1914)

World War I: Germans defeat the Russians in the Battle of Tannenberg (30. August 1914)

World War I: The German minelayer Königin Luise lays a minefield about 40 miles (64 km) off the Thames Estuary (Lowestoft). She is intercepted and sunk by the British light-cruiser HMS Amphion. (5. August 1914)

World War I: the German colony of Togoland is invaded by French and British forces, who take it after 5 days. (26. August 1914)

Franz Ferdinand, Archduke of Austria and his wife Sophie are assassinated in Sarajevo by Bosnia Serb nationalist Gavrilo Princip, the casus belli of World War I. (28. June 1914)

Mexican Revolution: One of the world's first naval/air skirmishes takes place off the coast of western Mexico. (9. April 1914)

World War I: The First Russian Army, led by Paul von Rennenkampf, enters East Prussia. (15. August 1914)

Aris is founded in Thessaloniki. (25. March 1914)

USS Nevada (BB-36) is launched. (11. July 1914)

19 men, women, and children die in the Ludlow Massacre during a Colorado coal-miner's strike. (20. April 1914)

World War I: A male servant of American architect Frank Lloyd Wright sets fire to the living quarters of the latter's Wisconsin home, Taliesin, murders seven people and burns the living quarters to the ground. (15. August 1914)

The new, and then the largest, Cunard ocean liner RMS Aquitania, 45,647 tons, sets sails on her maiden voyage from Liverpool, England, to New York, New York. (30. May 1914)

World War I: First Battle of the Atlantic – two days after the United Kingdom had declared war on Germany over the German invasion of Belgium, ten German U-boats leave their base in Heligoland to attack Royal Navy warships in the North Sea. (6. August 1914)
