Sailing in the lifeboat James Caird, Ernest Shackleton arrives at South Georgia after a journey of 800 nautical miles from Elephant Island. (10. May 1916)

President Woodrow Wilson sends 4,800 United States troops over the U.S.-Mexico border to pursue Pancho Villa. (15. March 1916)

An Arab Revolt against the Ottoman Empire led by Lawrence of Arabia breaks out. (10. June 1916)

U.S. President Woodrow Wilson signs a bill incorporating the Boy Scouts of America, making them the only American youth organization with a federal charter. (15. June 1916)

World War I: Battle of Jutland – The British Grand Fleet under the command of John Jellicoe, 1st Earl Jellicoe and David Beatty, 1st Earl Beatty engage the Imperial German Navy under the command of Reinhard Scheer and Franz von Hipper in the largest naval battle of the war, which proves indecisive.
