Cape Canaveral Air Force Station begins operations with the launch of a Bumper rocket. (24. July 1950)

Chaplain–Medic massacre: American POWs were massacred by North Korean Army. (16. July 1950)

The first successful ascent of an Eight-thousander; the summit of Annapurna is reached by Maurice Herzog and Louis Lachenal. (3. June 1950)

Korean War: Task Force Smith – American and North Korean forces first clash, in the Battle of Osan. (5. July 1950)

Pakistan joins the International Monetary Fund and the International Bank. (11. July 1950)

The Great Appalachian Storm of November 1950, known at the time as the "Storm of the Century", strikes New England with hurricane force winds resulting in massive forest blow-downs and storm surge damage along the Northeast coast including New York City. This storm also brings blizzard conditions to the Appalachian Mountains and Ohio Valley, becoming one of the worst storms of all time. 353 people die in the event. (25. November 1950)

Korean War: Troops from the People's Republic of China launch a massive counterattack in North Korea against South Korean and United Nations forces (Battle of the Ch'ongch'on River and Battle of Chosin Reservoir), ending any hopes of a quick end to the conflict. (26. November 1950)

Public Transport: Green Hornet disaster. A Chicago Surface Lines streetcar crashes into a fuel truck, killing 33. (25. May 1950)

The Korean War begins with the invasion of South Korea by North Korea. (25. June 1950)

The People's Liberation Army takes control of the town of Qamdo; this is sometimes called the "Invasion of Tibet". (19. October 1950)

Julien Lahaut, the chairman of the Communist Party of Belgium is assassinated by far-right elements. (18. August 1950)

Korean War: The Battle of Hill 282 the first US friendly-fire incident on British military personnel since World War II occurred. (23. September 1950)

Puerto Rican nationalists Griselio Torresola and Oscar Collazo attempt to assassinate US President Harry S. Truman at Blair House. (1. November 1950)

Iran becomes the first country to accept technical assistance from the United States under the Point Four Program. (19. October 1950)

General Carlos Delgado Chalbaud, President of Venezuela, is assassinated in Caracas. (13. November 1950)
