More than 127 Muslims are killed in North East Sri Lanka by paramilitary troops. (10. August 1990)

Iraq declares Kuwait to be its newest province. (28. August 1990)

Saddam Hussein appears on Iraqi state television with a number of Western "guests" (actually hostages) to try to prevent the Gulf War. (23. August 1990)

Iraq occupies Kuwait and the state is annexed to Iraq. This would lead to the Gulf War shortly afterward. (8. August 1990)

George Steinbrenner is forced by Commissioner Fay Vincent to resign as principal partner of New York Yankees for hiring Howie Spira to "get dirt" on Dave Winfield. (30. July 1990)

South Ossetia declares its independence from Georgia. (20. September 1990)

The Communist Party of the Russian Soviet Federative Socialist Republic is founded in Moscow. (19. June 1990)

The Jamaat al Muslimeen attempt a coup d'état in Trinidad and Tobago, occupying the Trinidad and the studios of Trinidad and Tobago Television, holding Prime Minister A. N. R. Robinson and most of his Cabinet as well as the staff at the television station hostage for 6 days. (27. July 1990)

Soviet Union leader Mikhail Gorbachev is awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for his efforts to lessen Cold War tensions and open up his nation. (15. October 1990)

The Lower Ohio Valley tornado outbreak spawns 66 confirmed tornadoes in Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, and Ohio, killing 12. Petersburg, Indiana, is the hardest-hit town in the outbreak, with 6 deaths. (2. June 1990)

The Dalai Lama unveils the Canadian Tribute to Human Rights in Canada's capital city of Ottawa. (30. September 1990)

Xiamen Airlines Flight 8301 is hijacked and lands at Guangzhou, where it crashes into two other airliners on the ground, killing 128. (2. October 1990)

Mary Robinson becomes the first woman to be elected President of the Republic of Ireland. (7. November 1990)

Fugendake, part of the Mount Unzen volcanic complex, Nagasaki Prefecture, Japan, becomes active again and erupts. (17. November 1990)

The Georgian Soviet Socialist Republic holds the first multiparty legislature election in the country's history. (28. October 1990)

Crown Prince Akihito is formally installed as Emperor Akihito of Japan, becoming the 125th Japanese monarch. (12. November 1990)

Space Shuttle program: Space Shuttle Atlantis launches with flight STS-38. (15. November 1990)

The YF-22, which would later become the F-22 Raptor, flies for the first time. (29. September 1990)
