Pope Pius XII witnesses the "Miracle of the Sun" while at the Vatican. (30. October 1950)

Goyang Geumjeong Cave Massacre started. (9. October 1950)

"Nino" Farina becomes the first Formula One Drivers' champion after winning the 1950 Italian Grand Prix. (3. September 1950)

Korean War: The First Battle of Maryang San, primarily pitting Australian and British forces against communist China, begins. (3. October 1950)

Korean War: British troops arrive in Korea to bolster the US presence there. (29. August 1950)

Indonesia joins the United Nations. (28. September 1950)

The Great Appalachian Storm of November 1950, known at the time as the "Storm of the Century", strikes New England with hurricane force winds resulting in massive forest blow-downs and storm surge damage along the Northeast coast including New York City. This storm also brings blizzard conditions to the Appalachian Mountains and Ohio Valley, becoming one of the worst storms of all time. 353 people die in the event. (25. November 1950)

Darlington Raceway is the site of the inaugural Southern 500, the first 500-mile NASCAR race. (4. September 1950)

Iran becomes the first country to accept technical assistance from the United States under the Point Four Program. (19. October 1950)

President Harry Truman orders the U.S. Army to seize control of the nation's railroads to avert a strike. (25. August 1950)

Edith Sampson becomes the first black U.S. delegate to the United Nations. (24. August 1950)

United Nations troops recapture Seoul from North Korean forces. (26. September 1950)

Korean War: United Nations repel an offensive by North Korean divisions attempting to cross the Naktong River and assault the city of Taegu. (20. August 1950)

Korean War: North Korean and Chinese troops force United Nations forces to retreat from North Korea. (29. November 1950)

Indonesia is admitted to the United Nations. (26. September 1950)

General Carlos Delgado Chalbaud, President of Venezuela, is assassinated in Caracas. (13. November 1950)

Lhamo Dondrub is officially named the 14th Dalai Lama. (17. November 1950)

Pope Pius XII claims papal infallibility when he formally defines the dogma of the Assumption of Mary. (1. November 1950)
