The High Court of Australia rules in Dietrich v The Queen that although there is no absolute right to have publicly funded counsel, in most circumstances a judge should grant any request for an adjournment or stay when an accused is unrepresented. (13. November 1992)

United States Navy radioman Allen R. Schindler, Jr. is brutally murdered by shipmate Terry M. Helvey for being gay, precipitating first military, then national, debate about gays in the military that resulted in the United States "Don't ask, don't tell" military policy. (27. October 1992)

In England, a fire breaks out in Windsor Castle, badly damaging the castle and causing over £50 million worth of damage. (20. November 1992)

The first smartphone, the IBM Simon, is introduced at COMDEX in Las Vegas, Nevada. (23. November 1992)

The Charlottetown Accord fails to win majority support in a Canada wide referendum. (26. October 1992)

NASA launches Space Shuttle Endeavour on STS-47 which marked the 50th shuttle mission. On board are Mae Carol Jemison, the first African-American woman in space, Mamoru Mohri, the first Japanese citizen to fly in a US spaceship, and Mark Lee and Jan Davis, the first married couple in space. The Carandiru Massacre takes place after a riot in the Carandiru Penitentiary in São Paulo, Brazil. (2. October 1992)

Brazilian President Fernando Collor de Mello is impeached. (29. September 1992)

An Iranian Kurdish leader and his two joiners are assassinated by political militants in Berlin, Germany. (17. September 1992)
