Vietnam War: An explosion sinks the USS Card while it is docked at Saigon. Viet Cong forces are suspected of placing a bomb on the ship. She is raised and returned to service less than 7 months later. (2. May 1964)

First ascent of Shishapangma the fourteenth highest mountain in the world and the lowest of the Eight-thousanders. (2. May 1964)

The Council of Europe declares May 5 as Europe Day. (5. May 1964)

Pacific Air Lines Flight 773, a Fairchild F-27 airliner, crashes near San Ramon, California, killing all 44 aboard; the FBI later reports that a cockpit recorder tape indicates that the pilot and co-pilot had been shot by a suicidal passenger. (7. May 1964)

Ngo Dinh Can, de facto ruler of central Vietnam under his brother President Ngo Dinh Diem before the family's toppling, is executed. (9. May 1964)

The U.S. President Lyndon B. Johnson announces the goals of his Great Society social reforms to bring an "end to poverty and racial injustice" in America. (22. May 1964)

Under a temporary order, the rocket launches at Cuxhaven, Germany are terminated. They never resume. (6. June 1964)

World War II veteran Walter Seifert runs amok in an elementary school in Cologne, Germany, killing at least eight children and two teachers and seriously injuring several more with a home-made flamethrower and a lance. (11. June 1964)

Anti-apartheid activist and ANC leader Nelson Mandela is sentenced to life in prison for sabotage in South Africa. (12. June 1964)

The Civil Rights Act of 1964 is approved after surviving an 83-day filibuster in the United States Senate. (19. June 1964)

Three civil rights workers, Andrew Goodman, James Chaney and Mickey Schwerner, are murdered in Neshoba County, Mississippi, United States, by members of the Ku Klux Klan. (21. June 1964)

Malcolm X forms the Organization of Afro-American Unity. (28. June 1964)

U.S. President Lyndon B. Johnson signs the Civil Rights Act of 1964 meant to prohibit segregation in public places. (2. July 1964)

Malawi declares its independence from the United Kingdom. (6. July 1964)

Vietnam War: at a rally in Saigon, South Vietnamese Prime Minister Nguyen Khanh calls for expanding the war into North Vietnam. (19. July 1964)
