The Professional Golfers' Association of America (PGA) is created in New York City. (10. April 1916)

Ernest Shackleton and five men of the Imperial Trans-Antarctic Expedition launch a lifeboat from uninhabited Elephant Island in the Southern Ocean to organise a rescue for the ice-trapped ship Endurance. (24. April 1916)

The Saturday Evening Post publishes its first cover with a Norman Rockwell painting (Boy with Baby Carriage). (20. May 1916)

World War I: Battle of Fromelles – British and Australian troops attack German trenches in a prelude to the Battle of the Somme. (19. July 1916)

President Woodrow Wilson sends 4,800 United States troops over the U.S.-Mexico border to pursue Pancho Villa. (15. March 1916)

World War I: Battle of Romani – Allied forces, under the command of Archibald Murray, defeat an attacking Ottoman army under the command of Friedrich Freiherr Kress von Kressenstein, securing the Suez Canal and beginning the Ottoman retreat from the Sinai Peninsula. (5. August 1916)

The United States National Park Service is created. (25. August 1916)

Mexican Revolution: Pancho Villa leads nearly 500 Mexican raiders in an attack against the border town of Columbus, New Mexico. (9. March 1916)

The Chicago Cubs play their first game at Weeghman Park (currently Wrigley Field), defeating the Cincinnati Reds 7-6 in 11 innings. (20. April 1916)

Emma Goldman is arrested for lecturing on birth control. (11. February 1916)

World War I: In the Erzurum Offensive, Russia defeats the Ottoman Empire. (10. January 1916)

Anzac Day is commemorated for the first time on the first anniversary of the landing at Anzac Cove. (25. April 1916)

In Seattle, Washington, William Boeing and George Conrad Westervelt incorporate Pacific Aero Products (later renamed Boeing). (15. July 1916)

The United States passes the Philippine Autonomy Act. (29. August 1916)
