War of the Second Coalition: Battle of Hohenlinden – French General Moreau decisively defeats the Austrian Archduke John near Munich. Coupled with First Consul Napoleon Bonaparte's earlier victory at Marengo, this will force the Austrians to sign an armistice and end the war. (3. December 1800)
The French garrison in Valletta surrenders to British troops who had been called at the invitation of the Maltese. The islands of Malta and Gozo become the Malta Protectorate. (4. September 1800)
