In the United States, a night-time F5 tornado strikes the small city of Udall, Kansas, killing 80 and injuring 273. It is the deadliest tornado to ever occur in the state and the 23rd deadliest in the U.S. (25. May 1955)

Mighty Mouse Playhouse premieres on American television. (10. December 1955)

Tokyo Telecommunications Engineering, the precursor to Sony, sells its first transistor radios in Japan. (7. August 1955)

The Cocos Islands are transferred from the control of the United Kingdom to that of Australia. (23. November 1955)

The South African Congress Alliance adopts the Freedom Charter at the Congress of the People in Kliptown. (26. June 1955)

Chile becomes a signatory to the Buenos Aires copyright treaty. (14. June 1955)

NORAD Tracks Santa for the first time in what will become an annual Christmas Eve tradition. (24. December 1955)

The Greek National Radical Union is formed by Konstantinos Karamanlis. (4. January 1955)

Operation Teapot: Teapot test shot "Wasp" is successfully detonated at the Nevada Test Site with a yield of 1.2 kilotons. Wasp is the first of fourteen shots in the Teapot series. (18. February 1955)

Eighteen Nobel laureates sign the Mainau Declaration against nuclear weapons, later co-signed by thirty-four others. (15. July 1955)

Black teenager Emmett Till is brutally murdered in Mississippi, galvanizing the nascent American Civil Rights Movement. (28. August 1955)

In a futile effort to topple President Juan Perón, rogue aircraft pilots of the Argentine Navy drop several bombs upon an unarmed crowd demonstrating in favor of Perón in Buenos Aires, killing 364 and injuring at least 800. At the same time on the ground, some forces soldiers attempt to stage a coup but are suppressed by loyal forces. (16. June 1955)

The Mickey Mouse Club debuts on ABC. (3. October 1955)

After the last Allied troops have left the country and following the provisions of the Austrian Independence Treaty, Austria declares permanent neutrality. (26. October 1955)

The polio vaccine, developed by Dr. Jonas Salk, is declared safe and effective. (12. April 1955)

McDonald's restaurant dates its founding to the opening of a franchised restaurant by Ray Kroc, in Des Plaines, Illinois (15. April 1955)

The military coup to unseat President Juan Perón of Argentina is launched at midnight. (16. September 1955)

Disneyland Hotel opens to the public in Anaheim, California. (5. October 1955)
