John C. Frémont is appointed Governor of the new California Territory. (16. January 1847)

Yerba Buena, California is renamed San Francisco. (30. January 1847)

Mexican–American War: The Battle of Buena Vista – 5,000 American troops defeat 15,000 Mexicans. (22. February 1847)
