The Kyoto Protocol comes into force, following its ratification by Russia. (16. February 2005)

A hand grenade thrown by Vladimir Arutinian lands about 65 feet (20 metres) from U.S. President George W. Bush while he is giving a speech to a crowd in Tbilisi, Georgia, but it malfunctions and does not detonate. (10. May 2005)

Over four million people attend the funeral of Pope John Paul II. (8. April 2005)

Kuwait permits women's suffrage in a 35-23 National Assembly vote. (16. May 2005)

The Sudan People's Liberation Movement and the Government of Sudan sign the Comprehensive Peace Agreement to end the Second Sudanese Civil War. (9. January 2005)

Seven people are killed and 151 wounded in a series of bombings by suspected al-Qaeda-linked militants that hit the Philippines' Makati financial district in Metro Manila, Davao City, and General Santos City. (14. February 2005)

The Oregon Supreme Court nullifies marriage licenses issued to gay couples a year earlier by Multnomah County. (14. April 2005)

A mudslide occurs in La Conchita, California, killing 10 people, injuring many more and closing U.S. Route 101, the main coastal corridor between Los Angeles and San Francisco for 10 days. (10. January 2005)

Mayerthorpe tragedy: James Roszko murders four Royal Canadian Mounted Police constables during a drug bust at his property in Rochfort Bridge, Alberta, then commits suicide. It is the deadliest peace-time incident for the RCMP since 1885 and the North-West Rebellion. (3. March 2005)

The Airbus A380, the world's largest commercial jet, is unveiled at a ceremony in Toulouse, France (18. January 2005)

Japan's Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi apologizes for Japan's war record. (22. April 2005)

Wedding of Charles, Prince of Wales and Camilla Parker Bowles; Charles, Prince of Wales marries Camilla Parker Bowles in a civil ceremony at Windsor's Guildhall. (9. April 2005)

The tallest roller coaster in the world, Kingda Ka opens at Six Flags Great Adventure in Jackson Township, New Jersey. (21. May 2005)

The controversial French law on colonialism is passed, requiring teachers to teach the "positive values of colonialism". After public outcry, it is repealed at the beginning of 2006. (23. February 2005)

Deep Impact launches from Cape Canaveral on a Delta II rocket. (12. January 2005)

Vanity Fair reveals that Mark Felt was Deep Throat. (31. May 2005)

Youtube is launched by a group of college students, eventually becoming the largest video sharing website in the world and a main source for viral videos. (14. February 2005)

U.S. Supreme Court rules that the execution of juveniles found guilty of murder is unconstitutional marking a change in "national standards,". (1. March 2005)
