Queen Elizabeth II of the United Kingdom addresses a joint session of the United States Congress. She is the first British monarch to address the U.S. Congress. (16. May 1991)

A runway collision between USAir Flight 1493 and SkyWest Flight 5569 at Los Angeles International Airport results in the deaths of 34 people, and injuries to 30 others. (1. February 1991)

The current flag of Hong Kong is adopted for post-colonial Hong Kong during the Third Session of the Seventh National People's Congress . (4. April 1991)

Gulf War: An Iraqi scud missile hits an American military barracks in Dhahran, Saudi Arabia killing 28 U.S. Army Reservists from Pennsylvania. (25. February 1991)

Gulf War: Operation Desert Storm begins early in the morning. Iraq fires 8 Scud missiles into Israel in an unsuccessful bid to provoke Israeli retaliation. (17. January 1991)

Northern Somalia declares independence from the rest of Somalia as the Republic of Somaliland but is not recognized by the international community. (18. May 1991)

Haiti's first democratically-elected president, Jean-Bertrand Aristide, is sworn in. (7. February 1991)

Soviet Union troops attack Lithuanian independence supporters in Vilnius, killing 14 people and wounding 1000. (13. January 1991)

In concurrent referenda, 74% of the population of Latvia votes for independence from the Soviet Union, and 83% in Estonia. (3. March 1991)

Five South Korean boys, nicknamed the Frog Boys, disappear while hunting for frogs and are murdered in a case that remains unsolved. (26. March 1991)

Bicesse Accords in Angola lay out a transition to multi-party democracy under the supervision of the United Nations' UNAVEM II mission. (31. May 1991)

Mount Unzen erupts in Kyūshū, Japan, killing 43 people, all of them either researchers or journalists. (3. June 1991)

Roger Lafontant, former leader of the Tonton Macoute in Haiti under François Duvalier, attempts a coup d'état, which ends in his arrest. (7. January 1991)

Zviad Gamsakhurdia becomes the first elected President of the Republic of Georgia in the post-Soviet era. (26. May 1991)
