World War I: Russia opens the Brusilov Offensive with an artillery barrage of Austro-Hungarian lines in Galicia. (4. June 1916)

Ernest Shackleton and five men of the Imperial Trans-Antarctic Expedition launch a lifeboat from uninhabited Elephant Island in the Southern Ocean to organise a rescue for the ice-trapped ship Endurance. (24. April 1916)

In San Francisco, California, a bomb explodes on Market Street during a Preparedness Day parade killing 10 and injuring 40. (22. July 1916)

World War I: In the Erzurum Offensive, Russia defeats the Ottoman Empire. (10. January 1916)

Child labor: In South Carolina, the minimum working age for factory, mill, and mine workers is raised from twelve to fourteen years old. (29. February 1916)

A 611 gram chondrite type meteorite strikes a house near the village of Baxter in Stone County, Missouri. (18. January 1916)

World War I: First day on the Somme – On the first day of the Battle of the Somme 19,000 soldiers of the British Army are killed and 40,000 wounded. (1. July 1916)
